What Colours Should Bridesmaids Wear?
March 31st, 2008Bridesmaids’ dress colours can be anything from pristine white to total black with or without other colours incorporated or used as trims and accents. Every bride decides the colour scheme for her wedding according to her taste, to complement her own dress scheme, the flowers in the bouquet, the general wedding theme and the tone of the ceremony. It is a totally personal choice. It is important to keep in mind that the colours chosen look good on the bridesmaids as well. Often combining colours can make certain combinations good for both dark and blonde bridesmaids, for skinny and well-filled out bridesmaids and for young and old bridesmaids. Things are never picture perfect as seen in wedding magazines where all the bridesmaids are the same height, build and age. Always keep in mind that the bridesmaids’ dresses must never overshadow the bride’s.
After taking into account the colour scheme and the wedding theme and the time of year, the bride decides on the final colour for the bridesmaids’ dresses. The bride is the one who finally decides even if there are dissents in the bridesmaids’ party. It is her wedding day and everything she says goes.
A bride may sometimes need to take into account the groom’s likes or dislikes. Some colours can be strongly disliked like purple or orange or whatever. No matter what the colour, it can be toned down or brightened up with trims or accents.
Dark colours like black, purple, navy blue, red, green and maroon can all look equally elegant for evening weddings. Making shorter gowns can do for afternoon weddings. Adding trims and accents with colours matching the bouquet colour or gold for an autumn wedding theme can make them blend with the tone of the ceremony. Keep in mind that certain colours look good on dark skin, while others on lighter skin. Dark colours usually make people look thinner than they are. Older bridesmaids look better with darker colours than pastels, but by adding a lavender or gold sash, trim or accent, the look of the dress can be changed to adapt to all ages.
Pastel colours are great for spring weddings and summer outdoor weddings, especially a young couple with young bridesmaids. It is important here to emphasize that the dress not be too fussy with frills, bows and wide skirts. By maintaining slim lines the dress can look great for a bridesmaid.
Orange and its relatives like coral and peach are not colours for everyone. Bright orange looks well for dark-skinned bridesmaids. By adding on gold, silver and other trims and accents, orange can be made to go well with many skin types.
White and ivory must not clash with the bridal gown but complement it. Colour or platinum accents can give it a certain sophisticated touch.
Finally it is the bride who will decide what colours she wants at her wedding.
