50 Year Old Sentimental Gold Ring Lost

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

A pensioner in Darlington is distraught because she lost her gold ring with black haematite somewhere between her home in Darlington and Newcastle. She and her family are looking for it everywhere and they are appealing to anyone who might have seen it to return it to them.

The ring is made from nine carat gold and in the centre is a black haematite stone which is cut like a diamond. Her husband bought it for her 52 years ago from a jewellery store in Keswick and she fondly remembers how her husband wanted it to be a surprise so she kneeled down at the counter and put up her hand to have the ring measured on her finger.

She and her daughter and family were on a trip to Newcastle and they even tried on clothes at a store so she doesn’t know when exactly the ring fell and got lost. She usually wore the ring on her little finger on the right hand but on that day, she changed the ring to her left hand. So she feels it could have slipped off anywhere but she’s hoping some good soul will find it and let her know.

Engagement Ring Found On Seabed

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Ninety years after a seaman passed away, his engagement ring was found on the seabed near Orkney. Two divers found it and traced the seaman’s nephew and handed the ring to him.

The engagement ring belonged to Stanley Cubiss who was on board a warship when it ran aground way back in 1918. There were 188 men among the crew.

All that was written on the ring was: ‘To Stanley from Flo, 6 March 1916’. Now we wonder how these two divers – Peter Brady and Bob Hamilton managed to trace the seaman’s nephew on the strength of that inscription.

His nephew, who is almost 80 years old, donated the ring as well as other memorabilia like medals and photos to the Scapa Flow Center which is on the island of Hoy. There are a few pieces there that were recovered from the two warships that sank in that area – HMS Opal and HMS Narborough. These artifacts will also go on display with the other items.
