Are Pink Diamonds The New Wave In Diamond Fashion?

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

They were always popular but in the last couple of years, they seem to be shooting up in the popularity stakes. It just seems that the world is going gaga over pink diamonds and we’ve seen so many of them being sold in auctions recently – both old and new and fetching incredible prices! It looks like ‘pink’ is definitely setting a trend and making news in the dazzling world of diamonds!

Let’s take a look at the ones that have made news recently. There was the Sotheby’s sale of the incredible pink diamond that went for the highest price, there was that Hong Kong Christie’s auction that sold the perfect pink dazzler to a buyer who wished to remain anonymous and a few days ago, there was the Christie’s New York auction which saw a 6.89 carat pink diamond go for over £4.3 million.

Actually, this diamond is not absolutely pink – it is a gorgeous purple-pink colour and it is set in 18k rose gold. It is a rectangular cur fancy diamond and it is surrounded buy a pave design in pink diamonds. There were other pieces of jewellery sold too and apparently what Christie’s got at this auction was the highest in an American auction.

Pink Diamond Rings Rule

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

When it is a natural pink diamond, you can be sure that it will be phenomenally expensive. Of course, there are treated diamonds too which acquire a pink colour and these too are very beautiful but a natural pink diamond has a charm and a value of its own, seeing as they are so rare. The largest pink diamond in the world today is 185 carats and it is called the Darya-i-Nur.

Today, most of the pink diamonds come from the Argyle mines in Australia, which also produces some other wonderful coloured diamonds. When it comes to pink diamonds however, nine-tenths of the world’s supply comes from these mines. Thanks to celebrity engagements where pink has become fashionable, pink diamonds too have made it to the ‘must-have’ status. Whether they are natural coloured or those with the colour enhanced, they are very much in demand indeed today.

Diamonds Go Pink For A Cause

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

In Canada, Carats Direct in Vancouver has joined hands with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in order to raise money for this worthy cause. They have designed eight special pins – these will obviously be a limited edition – and the pins will be in the shape of the logo of the Breast Cancer Foundation which happens to be a pink ribbon tied in the shape of a bow.

What they plan to do is to auction these pins and give the proceeds to the Foundation. The design was done by a jewellery designer who is a breast cancer survivor which makes it all the more poignant. It has a small pink diamond set among white diamonds in white gold.

Carats Direct happens to be the largest distributors of pink diamonds in the country so it was only natural that this colour was used to get some funds for this cause. It will, no doubt, spread a lot of awareness about this Foundation too.

Rio Tinto’s diamond mine in Australia called the Argyle mine is getting famous far away in America as could be seen by the reception it got at the G’Day USA Australia Week. This was an event to showcase the best of Australia and the main focus of the show was those pink beauties.

Pink diamonds from Argyle are much sought after all over the world and you could see them glittering away, spreading a rosy haze around at the gala dinner that came at the end of the event. Australian actresses and models flaunted the jewellery made with these diamonds – from a wonderful bracelet to a million dollar necklace to a 3.42 carat ring.

Pink diamonds are rare and can be found in only very few diamond mines all over the world and Argyle has 90% of the market. Celebrities like Portia de Rossi and Jennifer Lopez have been given engagement rings with pink diamonds.
