The 33.19 carat diamond ring that Richard Burton gave Elizabeth Taylor is going to be auctioned at a Christie’s auction this December. So is a lot of the other incredible jewellery she owned and among this will be several wedding rings – after all, she was married so many times and two of them were given to her by Richard Burton because they were married twice.
Some of the other pieces of jewellery that will be auctioned include some more gifts by Richard Burton to her. One is a necklace which has a 55-carat pearl in the centre. He bought this pearl at an auction and it was a part of the Spanish Crown jewels. Elizabeth Taylor had it made into a necklace by Cartier by surrounding it by rubies and pearls. It really was a fitting setting for a pearl that seemed to be the most perfect one ever. There is also an art deco necklace put up for auction and this was his fortieth birthday present to her. There’s also a Cartier set that Mike Todd gave her.
There are a number of rings that will be auctioned as well as brooches of which she had many. One was given to her by Richard Burton at the premiere of Night of the Iguana and there’s another that she bought which belonged to the Duchess of Windsor. She also bought herself an emerald set in Rome during the time Cleopatra was being shot. The auction will be displayed in many places. The exhibition will start in Moscow in a few days’ time and will end in December when the auction will be held.

Elizabeth Taylor might have acted in a number of movies and been the darling of so many fans around the world but she is also known for the incredible bling she owned, especially her collection of diamonds. For her, bigger was better and she had the men in her life willing to give her diamonds that were humungous.

Perhaps the most famous diamond in her collection was the Krupp Diamond and it was given to her by Richard Burton. This diamond ring has the 33 carat famous diamond and it was Burton’s very first gift to her during their marriage. It is said that she wore the diamond ring always, even on a shoot. Richard Burton also gave her the famous Taylor- Burton diamond which is all of 69 carats and was bought and carved by Harry Winston into a pear shaped pendant. She sold this after their divorce and set up a hospital in Botswana with the proceeds. When Elizabeth Taylor turned 40, Burton gave her a heart-shaped yellow diamond called the Taj Mahal diamond and it had the words ‘Love is Everlasting’ inscribed at the back.

She also got a diamond ring from Mike Todd which she also wore often. This ring had a 29 carat diamond in it. He gave her an antique diamond tiara too, which she loved to wear. Elizabeth Taylor also bought a lot of jewellery, most famously, the Duchess of Windsor’s brooch after her death. Wallis Simpson and she were friends and she bought this diamond brooch in a plume shape at the auction.

It looks like the famous Liz Taylor is at it again, doing what she does best – hogging the headlines with news of yet another wedding in the offing. This is going to be the ninth time for her if she does get married. While official spokespeople deny that anything is in the offing, reliable sources say that she is getting married and that preparations are on. It looks like the event is going to be at the end of the year.

The lucky man, if you can call him that, is Jason Winters who is not yet fifty while she will soon be eighty. However, he’s been managing her affairs for a while now and it looks like they are very close. In fact, they seem to have kept quiet about how close they are even though they have been seen together on the red carpet of many events together.

The exciting news is what is being done behind the scenes in preparation for the wedding. Sources say that a bejewelled turban is being made for the wedding and it is going to be studded with diamonds. Jeweller Christian Tse and designer Keith Holman are supposed to be working to get it ready. No one knows the location yet but everyone’s talking and waiting excitedly to see how it all unfolds.

It’s true. There’s something about celebrities that make us want to know everything about them and an engagement is such a big part of people’s lives. We get a kind of vicarious pleasure when the media takes us into their personal lives – lives that maybe secretly we wish we had. And of course, the fact that their diamond rings are usually bigger and so much more expensive that we could ever hope to wear makes it just that much more enthralling.

Let’s take a look at some of the rings that probably made our eyes pop out of their sockets just looking at pictures! There was Paris Hilton’s 24 carat ring from her billionaire boyfriend though that did not lead to a wedding ring. And of course, Christina Aguilera’s 20 carat diamond engagement ring. More recently, there was Beyonce’s 18-carat ring. ( Gosh – how do they carry those rocks around?) Oh, let’s not forget the biggest one of them all – Elizabeth Taylor’s 30-carat diamond engagement ring – just one of her many!

Royalty has always been in the news for their jewellery. There was Princess Diana’s 18-carat ring and before that, Grace Kelly’s 12-carat ring.
