Setting himself a target, a groom-to-be decided to go to the Highlands and pan for gold to make an engagement ring. 46-year old John Greenwood decided he would pan for the gold himself, thus making it a very special ring. He went every weekend to the rivers around Perthshire where he lived. During the week, he worked as an explosives technician and during the weekends, he spent time panning for that gold.
In three months, he managed to pan 34 g of gold and that was enough not just for an engagement ring but for two wedding bands and maybe more. It must have given him such joy to be able to do this himself. He took the gold he had panned to a jeweller and had some of it set as a diamond engagement ring. Then, on Christmas Day, he asked his girlfriend Morag to marry him. What could she do but accept when he had poured so much love into it?
John Greenwood took up panning a year and a half ago and very often, he had to stand in freezing water while he looked for the gold. He says he just got lucky because very often, it takes people a lot longer to get this much gold. Maybe his love and willpower to do it himself helped him get what he wanted and more in three months. All he used was a rake, a shovel, a trowel and a gold pan. Most gold nuggets are miniscule so it takes a lot of waiting and of course, luck to get enough to make it worthwhile. An official in the panning department said that for some, it could well take thirty years to get what John had managed and all he actually needed was four grams of gold which is what he used to make the engagement ring.

They were on vacation when he proposed and it must have lit up the Caribbean vacation for her. He’s 26 and she is 22 and as soon as it was done, the world knew about it – through Twitter of course. He was lucky however and didn’t lose his life but he was hurt and he was sent back home for one surgery after another on his hands. He also won the Purple Heart award for bravery.
That was when he decided to write about it all and he did. He wrote in for a contest called ‘My Perfect Union’ and it was being held by a jewellery company. Mike’s story was simple. Whoever deserved any award and accolades was the wife back home who kept things going, both the home and the children, without complaining. He wrote that for him, it was his wife who deserved all the praise because she had been there for him through everything.
He won the prize – and it was a diamond engagement ring. Though they were already married, this was a great gift he could give his wife and he is so happy to be able to show how much she means to him with this gift. He also got a cheque as part of the prize. The chief of the jewellery company was touched and inspired when he read Mike’s story.

Last month, Selena performed at the Belfast Europe Music Awards. She was also supposedly at the X Factor show when Justin performed at the finale but she managed to keep her presence a secret. Their vacation in Los Cabos was also very written about but according to their spokespeople, apparently they are not engaged. So one wonders why Selena had that diamond ring on her finger!

Some pensioners from Staddiscombe had taken a trip just for the day to Dartmoor to have a Christmas lunch on the moors. They had all set out in a coach and the coach driver dropped them all back and it was then that one of the, a 91-year old, realised that her sapphire and diamond engagement ring was missing. It was of very great sentimental value to her so she was devastated.

E-Land bought the famous diamond ring that Richard Burton gave Liz Taylor and the ring will have pride of place in their theme park, E-World at Daegu, Korea. Elizabeth Taylor passed away in March 2011 and Christie’s put her jewellery up for auction in New York on Tuesday. They have already collected a record amount for this single collection – the auction goes on till Saturday.

So he bought her a diamond named the Taj Mahal instead, a diamond that was mined, cut and polished in India. It had once belonged to Mumtaz Mahal, a gift for her husband Shah Jehan who built the Taj Mahal and Burton bought it from Cartier’s and had it set as a pendant. And so an era has passed and Liz Taylor’s diamond rings and other jewellery have passed into new hands but the romance will always be alive in the diamonds.
This collection beat the Duchess of Windsor’s collection auction in 1987 by well over double the amount collected. The best pieces were all sold and it was a very satisfying day for Christie’s. There were her famous pearls which were also sold as was the wig she wore in Cleopatra. It was, to say the least, an extravagant auction.

He took her for a ride in a horse carriage in Central Park and proposed to her – how romantic was that! Of course, she was so ecstatic that she immediately posted the good news on Twitter.

Aaron is a decorator and a painter and he has been with her through her ups and downs in showbiz. After her rather disastrous exit from the X Factor, she was in a couple of successful shows like I’m a Celebrity and Get me out of here. She now has a single that is going to be released at Christmastime. This holiday in New York, the proposal and the baby due in May has made her one very happy woman.
