One Of DeBeers Diamond Mines Up For Sale

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

The Jagersfontein mines owned by the diamond giant DeBeers has been put up for sale and it looks like this property in South Africa will pass into the hands of investors who have black empowerment. This mine was operational from way back in 1870 right up to 1971 and from this mine, there have been many diamonds of repute that have been discovered at the end of the nineteenth century, like the Excelsior Diamond, nearly 1000 carats which was cut into 11 diamonds and the Jubilee, around 650 carats. In the sixties, the Earth Star was discovered, weighing nearly 250 carats but it was cut down to a pear-shaped dazzling diamond of a little over 111 carats.

The proposed sale of this mine is in line with the company’s policy to sell off anything that is not consistent with its commercial policy and also to hand over economic power in this area to more black people from the country. The diamond production from this mine might have dropped compared to earlier times but it is still a prestigious mine.

DeBeers Wedding Rings Part Of Wedding Contest

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Mid-July, the winners of the contest ‘Today throws a wedding’ in New York got to walk down the aisle knowing that all their wedding expenses were paid for by the TODAY show. Now that’s something! The great part was, the viewers voted for who they thought should be the winners of the contest. The winners were Leigh Daniel and Nick Cordes and while their wedding rings are DeBeers, a lot of the other wedding expenses are still to be chosen by popular vote. This will include the honeymoon destination.

The wedding bands were chosen from an array of wedding rings that were put up – so was the wedding dress. The rings were an 18-carat white gold ring for her with three rows of diamonds and a platinum ring for him with a single diamond. This is something that takes place every year on NBC’s morning show and while couples compete, it is up to the viewers to decide what the wedding will be like. It really is a great boon for one lucky couple every year.

More Diamond Rings On More Fingers

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

There was a DeBeers study in America about diamonds which is quite illuminating. The survey very clearly came up with the fact that most women get diamonds as engagement rings. In fact the count was four out of every five women. Diamonds surely seem to be a girl’s best friend – or so 80% seem to be telling the world.

So what about the size of the diamond that most are choosing? Seems that many were looking at and buying diamonds that were at least one carat and spending over $3500 on the ring – and this was quite a chunk of the amount they would be spending on the wedding.

Considering that it was only in the late nineteenth century that diamonds and engagement rings became popular – thanks in no small measure to the DeBeers advertising blitzkrieg – diamonds do seem to have come a long way. Today, the diamond, especially a solitaire on an engagement ring is the dream that blossoms in every young girl’s heart and the line ‘A Diamond Is Forever’ has acquired an almost legend-like status. It was probably just the right pitch at the right time and soon the diamond engagement ring became so much a part of the courtship-marriage ritual all over the world.
