So Carrie Underwood, the American Idol of a few years ago is engaged and we’re wondering what her engagement ring looks like. She is engaged to Mike Fisher from the Ottawa Senators hockey team and it would seem that he has given her the diamonds that are her favourite – black ones.

Apparently, a few days before the engagement, Carrie had written in her blog that black diamonds were becoming the trend and that many people were wearing them. She said they were attractive – as much as any other diamond. She also wrote that they were brought freshness to conventional jewellery – so was she hinting, or did she know what she was going to get?

It might take a little getting used to but the elegance of black seems to be seeping into the engagement ring scene as well. Paul Williams decided that he wanted to ask his girlfriend Sarah Taylor to marry him with something different. He thought the regular engagement ring was so passé! He also wanted to look beyond the classic solitaire. So he chose black diamonds set in black gold. Sarah was stunned but when she looked closely at it, she realised just how exquisite it was.

This seems to be a trend that is slowly coming in. Designers in London are confirming that there are more young couples looking for different rings even while they want diamonds. So black diamonds as well as coloured diamonds seems to be popular choices for engagement rings. Some seem to prefer rough, uncut diamonds too. It looks like there’s a wave of change when it comes to engagement rings.

No longer are diamonds just a girl’s best friend. More and more men are wearing them too on their wedding rings. Time was when a man’s wedding ring was solid yellow gold – no frills, no fancy designs, they all looked the same and if you saw one, you saw them all. Not anymore, not with men getting designer jewellery conscious. The first changes came with the metal itself. Suddenly you had platinum, white gold, titanium, etc. Now it’s diamonds and the great thing is, these stones can be tailored to give a man a tough and masculine look.

The metal is still solid and masculine, but encrusted in that metal are glittering gems that stand for fidelity and enduring love. What is different usually from the diamonds women wear is the colour. Black diamonds are finding favour with men and it could soon become a trend. Today, wedding rings can be matched with designs that are similar for both the bride and the groom. Imagine a similar design, if you will, with the woman’s diamonds being white while the man’s are black. Most of the black diamond rings are done in a pavé design and for them to stand out, it is advisable to use white gold.

Who ever would have thought that black diamonds could be the rage one day? Come on, let’s face it, for so long we’ve always associated diamonds with white and sparkling. However, over the past few years, perceptions have been changing, thanks in no small measure to leading jewellery designers and celebrities who love to set the trend. So suddenly, diamonds went pink, blue, yellow and even brown. So from there to black was just a small step.

Black diamonds are being seen as the new fashion statement for both men and women. They’re calling the black diamond ring the jewellery of reconciliation – so now love means saying sorry with a black diamond ring! Black diamonds are great by themselves as solitaires or they look sensational when you design them with other stones as well. The fall and winter designs from the reputed American jewellery house, Yael’s, is going to sparkle with black and white diamonds, notably chunky diamond rings. Called the Mosaic Collection, it has forty eight pieces of jewellery from rings to pendants to earrings. The black and white diamonds in this collection are all set in white gold and they are all in abstract and geometric designs.

The designs have a mosaic like effect because of the small diamonds in both colours being placed close to each other to form a perfect whole. It might look very simple but on closer inspection can be found to be very intricate designs in a pavé design. Most of them are designed with a curvature that is near-perfect.
