She Chooses To Wear His Ring
It was tradition. When a man wanted to propose to the girl of his dreams, he went down on one knee. Then, surprise, surprise, he pulled out a beautiful solitaire diamond engagement ring and proposed. Does this hold true even today?
Well, women do like a surprise. But is there a little sneaky voice inside her that says “this diamond engagement ring is not quite me” or “I don’t really care for this design or the stone, or the setting…”? In a bridal focus group done a few years ago at least 25% of the women were wearing a diamond engagement ring they didn’t like. They loved that their fiancé had surprised them but they all wished the ring was something different, something that they could have chosen, a diamond engagement ring that was more to their taste.
Today’s woman is more assertive, and not shy about asking for what she wants. She has her own personal style and she wants a ring to have personality. She wants a ring that makes a statement and reflects who she is. She wants a say in what her diamond engagement ring looks like - whether it has bigger stones or smaller stones, traditional or non traditional settings, gold, platinum or whatever other metal.
Left to himself, the groom will choose a solitaire diamond engagement ring, because that is his idea of what a diamond engagement ring should look like. But let him take his fiancée to the store, and she will point out the shapes she likes, and the settings. She will drop hints as to whether she prefers gold, platinum or white gold.
Recently The Diamond Trading Company did a survey of 10,000 couples in the US, and found that only 19% of men surprised their fiancé with a diamond engagement ring. Most women very clearly said what they wanted, or chose it. Some women even went as far as buying the ring, wrapping it and then giving it to their partner together with the receipt.
Today, there are so many kinds of rings to choose from – clusters of diamonds, three-stone rings with pink or blue sapphires or emeralds or rubies flanking the diamond. There are princess cuts, emerald cuts - the choice is tremendous. Often it takes looking through many, many diamond shapes and setting styles to find out which one suits her best. That’s why it’s better to take her along when picking out a diamond engagement ring.
This is a ring that will always mean so much to her. It is a symbol of your deep love and emotional bond. Now it can also be a ring that she loves to wear – for the way it suits her.
