Famous Engagement Rings
Any engagement ring is sure to set off a few ‘oohs’ and ‘aaahs’ from friends and family. However, when it comes to the rich and famous, an engagement ring is a thing of more than just beauty – it is the fodder for a whole blaze of media coverage. The bigger and more expensive the engagement ring, the more the media will have its readers hanging onto its every word. Of course, the bigger and brighter the diamond would obviously mean that the celebrity who wears the rings or the one who has given her the ring is headliner material as well.
Let’s take a look through the annals of history to see which the most famous engagement rings were that caused a flurry of excitement.
The first person to be honored with a diamond engagement ring was Mary of Burgundy in 1477. She was engaged to Archduke Maximilian of Hamburg, also called the ‘The Last Knight’. This was perhaps the earliest famous engagement ring.
Another engagement ring worthy of mention is Queen Victoria’s. Queen Victoria’s engagement ring was made in the shape of a serpent. As no one before had worn a ring in this shape, it was widely talked about and became famous too.
Princess Mary was the youngest of the celebrities who received a diamond engagement ring. She was presented with a tiny engagement ring with a large diamond on it when she was engaged to the Dauphin of France at the age of two. This interesting engagement took place in the year 1518.
Then of course, we have the engagement ring of Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth (now Queen Elizabeth II). This engagement ring was made of heirloom diamonds from his mother’s crown. Yet another famous engagement ring was the one worn by Lady Diana Spencer. Her engagement ring was made of sapphires and diamonds and the ring and the engagement caused ripples of excitement all over the world. Prince Andrew gave Sarah Ferguson a ruby and diamond engagement ring.
After royalty, there were actresses with their famous engagement rings. Actress Jean Harlow received her engagement ring from William Powell and this engagement ring was made of a 150 carat cabochon sapphire which she wore in her movie ‘Saratoga’. Grace Kelly was presented with a 12 carat emerald cut diamond ring by Prince Rainer on their engagement. Kate Hudson, the leading Hollywood actress received an Asscher cut diamond ring from her ex-husband Chris Robinson. Whitney Houston received an engagement ring embedded with oval diamonds from Toni Braxton. Madonna was presented with a three stoned diamond ring made of platinum from Guy Ritchie.
It’s a long, long list and every time the media comes up with yet another wonderful engagement ring that is slipped onto some lucky woman’s finger, the rest of the world laps it up, always hungry for more. There’s just something about an engagement ring that is so exciting!
