Being asked to be the best man at a wedding is quite an honour. It shows you have a special place in the groom’s life. There are responsibilities that go along with accepting the invitation to be the best man and one of those happens to be the ring.

What about the Ring Bearer?

Many couples opt to have a young, male relative play the role of ring bearer. The best man will be responsible for the little boy to make sure he has the rings securely fastened on the ring pillow. If you are hesitant about permitting a young child to be responsible for the wedding rings, then by all means have the bride’s ring in the possession of the best man.

If you opt for the ring bearer to carry the real thing, you are well advised to secure the rings either by sewing them in place or attaching them in some other semi-permanent form. The last thing you want is to find the rings are missing during the ring exchange ceremony.

Before the Wedding

The best man is expected to get dressed for the occasion where the groom is preparing for this most special day. He can make sure the groom has everything he needs in order for the ceremony to run smoothly and oversee the other groomsmen as to their toiletries and attire.

What Else is the Best Man Expected to Do?

The best man’s role in a wedding can be described simply as being the right hand man of the groom. The best man is expected to give the first toast not only at the reception, but at the rehearsal dinner as well. He should act as host of the party when the bride and groom are busy elsewhere. He should introduce guests to one another and leave room on his dance card to dance with not just the maid of honour, but the bride and her mother as well as the mother of the groom.

The best man is responsible for the rest of the ushers in the wedding party. He needs to be sure they are properly attired, check the boutonnieres to be sure they are fastened properly. He also needs to make sure the men are in their positions for the wedding. Many a wedding has been delayed because the ushers are involved in stress relieving horseplay or one or more has gone out for a last smoke.

Being a best man comes with much responsibility, but it is an honour that is usually bestowed on a friend or relative that is greatly loved. Don’t be nervous about accepting, your presence beside your good friend is what is most important and no matter what you do, you are not likely to disappoint the nervous groom.
