Will Engagement Rings Now Come From Outer Space?
It was once a huge star and now it has become a small planet – and guess what it is made of? It seems to be a dense material and in all likelihood, it is pure diamond. There it is, tucked among the stars of the Milky Way – imagine just how many diamond rings could be made with a planet like that. It might just start a diamond rush – only this time it will be an intergalactic one with spaceships hurtling through space to claim areas on the planet where they can excavate.
How did astronomers chance upon this unusual and unique planet? A team headed by Professor Matthew Bailes from Melbourne, Australia was the first to spot it. This international team at the Swinburne University of Technology realised that there was a dense planet going around the pulsar identified as PSR J1719-1438. It happened when they were routinely going through huge masses of data from research companies around the world and this had to be among the largest research studies that have been done.
This research means collating and sifting through data collected by telescopes and tracking equipment all over the world. It was while they were looking for pulsars that they discovered this planet that they knew just had to be crystalline – it was so much denser than the rest. Of course, this team just needs to supervise and look for interesting and abnormal phenomena because there are so many supercomputers that do everything for them when it comes to looking through information. Panning for gold seems to have gone beyond our planet to panning the space and what a wonderful find this is!
