And Now, An Engagement Ring Law
It had to happen sometime in the US. There’s a law that says that in most instances, the engagement ring goes back to the one who paid for it – the man. This is because the ring wasn’t a gift that was given freely with no strings attached. It is really a conditional gift – one that presumes that the engagement will lead to marriage.
There are however, shades of grey in the law. What happens of it is the man who breaks the engagement? Then why should the woman who is jilted be asked to return the ring? Shouldn’t she keep it as some kind of compensation for what she has been through? What happens if the man’s behaviour is intolerable? According to lawyers, this law will always have exceptions and will rarely be black and white. Each relationship is different and that will need to be kept in mind when it comes to the engagement ring.
