The measurement of the white light or the brilliance of a diamond has been very accurate the past ten years or so thanks to measurement equipment from the company called GemEx Systems. They introduced this system towards the end of the nineties and since then, it has been the standard by which you measure a diamond’s colour, light and sparkle.
The equipment is called the GemEx BrillianceScope® Analyzer and it uses patented spectrophotometer technology. The equipment came into being after the company measured thousands and thousands of diamonds in order to come to a standard. So it can measure the most and the least amount of light given the size, shape and weight of a diamond. It gives you the brilliance quotient of the diamond in question under five different lights.
The diamond is placed in a one-inch depression in a three-inch sphere and an angle of light is created. The diamond is then repositioned five times so there’s a different angle of light each time. The tests are repeated for best results.

Florida residents have been subjected to a spate of burglaries by thieves pretending to be utilities men. So many older people either live here or move south during the winter to enjoy the warmer climate. The last thing they want is to be parted from their valuables when they are here.
Here’s how the thieves have been having a field day – they pretend to be quality or safety inspectors and get into the house. Then, they make away with valuables like jewellery without the owners even aware of the fact that they have been burgled. In most cases, the theft comes to light much after the man or men have left and it is too late to do anything about it.
In one instance, an 86-year old lady lost her three-carat diamond ring as well as her wedding ring when a man who said he was from the water company was inspecting her house. This was a ring that her husband had given her on their 25th wedding anniversary and they had been married for 64 years. The sad thing is, most people do not even remember what exactly the man or men looked like.

A jeweller in the UK, H. Samuel, is trying to promote the concept of male diamond engagement rings. Why not, when women are doing so well financially now and there are many women proposing to men today? So why not do it with a diamond engagement ring? This doesn’t just have to be in the Leap Year anymore but can quite become a way of life.
The diamond engagement ring that is being promoted for men happens to be made of titanium and has a small diamond set in it. If a woman does not want to wait around for the man to go down on one knee and pop the question, now she has no need to wait. She can go ahead and pop the question herself. One wonders though who should be the one going down on one knee.
The ring will also be a sure signal to single women at the workplace of a man’s status. A diamond engagement ring would be one great way of saying, ‘Hands off!’ The days of equal opportunity have indeed dawned.

Diamond Rings worth over £70,000 were stolen from a shop called Thomas Jewellers in the US. Fortunately, the surveillance cameras at the jewellery store worked so the police were able to get hold of pictures of the thieves, which showed three men and one woman. Unfortunately, they have not been traced or found yet.
What’s sad but true is the fact that this heist was done right under the staff’s noses and these four conniving thieves seem to have made off with around sixty rings which they took out of a safe that was left open. There was a solitaire that weighed 3 carats, a couple of 2-carat rings and a dozen 1-carat ones.
The modus operandi seems to have been to take a tray of diamonds out of the safe while the staff was distracted. They seem to have been in the shop for a little over fifteen minutes and they did not leave together. They all seemed to be young – probably in their twenties. While two of them distracted the store salesmen, one seems to have stepped behind the counter and made off with the tray of rings. All second hand dealers have been notified in case some of the rings surfaced.

As usual, the awards function was a great place to air one’s jewellery and the stars did not disappoint. Diamonds sparkled from fingers, throats, ears, wrists and wherever jewellery could be worn. The Beverly Hilton was ablaze with the brilliant bling of this precious stone.
What was perhaps apparent was that many of them – both young and old seemed to prefer the classic style when it came to diamonds. True, you did see a bit of contemporary fashionable jewellery but for the most part, it was the elegant and the classic when it came to diamonds. Diamond rings were on almost every finger and Beyonce had on huge drop earrings as well as a sparkler of a necklace. Kate Winslet, who won a Golden Globe, had on oval drop earrings too and a magnificent bracelet while Elizabeth Banks had on a whopper of a necklace.
The red carpet was a wonderful sight to behold with so much dazzle – both the stars and their finery, with the high point of course being all those beautiful diamonds.

The new year has just kicked off and already there are very strong signs of a wave of colour hitting the diamond ring design scene. Suddenly, it looks like so many people in the world want coloured diamonds for their engagement rings. Not just their engagement rings but diamond rings for any occasion.
Now why would this sudden trend happen? There have been trends before when coloured diamonds made an appearance but it was mostly restricted to celebrities and you found that there were seasons for yellow, pink and brown coloured diamonds. This new trend however, seems to be moving across all strata of society. One wonders if in a world where the future seems bleak, people are looking for colour in their life everywhere. Do coloured precious stones make people feel uplifted?
One doesn’t really know why this trend has begun and it is really hard to predict whether it is just a seasonal burst which will die out or a trend that is here to stay. All we know is that it is going to make for a colourful year ahead!

Fergie and Josh Duhamel got married in Malibu, California on the 10th of this month, that’s just a few short days ago. Fergie’s engagement ring had been designed by H. Stern, the Brazilian designer. Their wedding rings as also the wedding accessories were designed by him too.
Her diamond engagement ring was to die for. A wonderful four-carat diamond was set in a band that was stunning in its colour scheme – the colours ranged from white right through to cognac. The wedding ring matched so well with her unusual and unique diamond engagement ring. It was a narrow wedding ring, and the designer had fashioned it out of his 18 K Noble Gold. The wedding band designed for Josh was Fergie’s idea and it had natural lines and edges that were asymmetric. Both the rings had personal messages to each other engraved on them.

Nathan and Tera of Appleton, USA got engaged in a rather sweet, special way. He wrote her a poem, went down on one knee and proposed with a diamond ring. They decided to have a typical white wedding with all the trimmings but everything had to be done much quicker because they just had a few months before Nathan would go for military training and then be sent off to Iraq for a year.
Tera was surprised when he asked her to marry her. They had met and liked each other but Nathan was sure she was the one for him. So when he placed the paper in which he had written his poem on the ground and asked her to pick it up and read it, she wasn’t sure what was happening till his proposal followed. After that, it was a whirl of flurried preparation till the wedding. Nathan preferred to wear a tuxedo even though most military men like getting married in their uniforms.
There’s been a marriage fever in the area with many men having been called to go do their duty. So before they leave, they would rather tie the knot. In fact, they say the last month has seen the number of weddings shoot up.

They got married thirty three years ago and they couldn’t afford to buy wedding rings. Then after that, somehow everything else came first – their children and then their grandchildren. So they just went along together without wedding rings. For this couple in New Lexington, it was no big deal. Sure, it was something they dreamed about but they weren’t going to get all distraught about it.
Then one day, their dream came true. Thanks to a wish Randy, the husband made. He had wished that both of them could have diamond wedding rings and the SunBridge Grants Twilight Wishes Programme made it come true for them. This is an organisation that goes out looking for wishes that old people make and if possible, they strive to make them come true. Randy had put in his wish too with many others but there was a long line of wishes to be granted so they had to wait close to a year before it came to their wish. It was a corporate employee who traded in her old wedding band for a wedding set for the couple. Quite an occasion was made of it, including a priest to bless the rings before the couple slipped them on.
They are still so much in love with each other but with the wedding rings in place it seems like their love has got a whole new lease of life.

In times of trouble, some lucky person could become the owner of the wonderful Canary diamond – the Gran Canaria. With what is happening to the economy, this unique diamond has been offered for sale on the internet by a leading New York jeweller. There are only four diamonds that are like this in the world and the Gemmological Institute of America has certified that it is indeed one of the unique brilliant diamonds in the world.
The Gran Canaria weighs 27.6 carats and it is rated as having a VS 1 clarity. It really is one of the planet’s rarest diamonds and it has no fluorescence whatsoever so it makes it so much clearer. Will it be bought to be set as a diamond engagement ring? Well if it were, that ring will be one of the most exclusive and unique rings ever. It will set the standard of what diamond rings should be and it will raise the bar of how exclusive diamond rings should be among the rich and famous. Will the jewellery store get the price it wants at a time like this? They must think they will to have so confidently put it up for sale.

We have news about the actress in ‘Yes Man’ - Zooey Deschanel. She’s been caught on camera with a diamond engagement ring on her finger – and one from Neil Lane no less! The 28 year old actress is engaged to 32 year old Ben Gibbard the singer for Death Cab for Cutie and the Postal Service.
When did this happen? According to informed sources, it was just before the start of the holiday season and both of them look as pleased as punch. Zooey Deschanel comes from a family that has been in the focus on the silver screen. Her father is most notably known as the cinematographer for The Passion of Christ for which he got an Academy Award and her mother is an actress of some repute. From an early age, Zooey sought and revelled in the bright lights and has a string of movies like Almost Famous under her belt. Her recent one has Jim Carey as well. Zooey is also a singer and a theatre star. Ben is an indie musician and is a staunch supporter of vegan and animal rights.
The joke around town is that when Ben asked Zooey to marry him just before Christmas, she said ‘Yes, man!’ What took a lot of people by surprise about this engagement was that most people, especially the press didn’t even know they were dating.
