Diamond Rings For Charity
The Salvation Army kettles get some unusual donations. Quite honestly, the people who open the charity kettles never quite know what is going to show up when they open them. From buttons to rare coins, from jewellery to gold and silver coins – it’s becoming quite fashionable to donate the unusual and the expensive to the Salvation Army.
Recently, a bell ringer at a drugstore in Tucson, Arizona was surprised when an old, well dressed lady approached a kettle and dropped five rings into it. There were three diamond engagement rings and two gold wedding rings and the lady stated that it was a very special donation. The Salvation Army has still to value the rings but they are sure to fetch a tidy sum – all of which go towards their programs of feeding the poor, providing shelters as well as managing disasters.
Are people suddenly getting more charitable or is it more that they have so much that a little bit like a few rings doesn’t really matter that much? Whatever it is, the donations are going up and that in itself is a very positive as well as healthy sign.
