Diamond Rings And Other Luxuries Implicate Taiwan Ex-President

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Chen Shui-bian, the former President of Taiwan is being held captive in the country he headed till very recently. For eight years, he enjoyed being at the helm of a fast developing and advancing country. However, allegations of money laundering have been made against him and his family and it looks like the investigation will be on for a long time.

Chen’s son and daughter-in-law are supposed to have transferred nearly £15 million to Swiss bank accounts last year. The couple is away studying in the US. Chen’s wife too, is reported to have wired nearly £10 abroad and these were taken from his campaign fund. Chen however denies all knowledge of these allegations and states that he did no wrong. This is in spite of the fact that most people believe that he embezzled money in special expenses during his term as President.

Prosecutors have unearthed the expense of one and a half million Taiwan dollars on luxuries for his wife – and a lot of that money was spent on diamond rings. The lure of the sparkle of diamonds was a bit too much to resist, we believe. Little wonder the party lost the last election.

From A 3-Carat Pink Diamond Engagement Ring To A Neil Lane Wedding Band

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Soon after the California Supreme Court lifted the ban on same sex marriages, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi announced their plans to get married. It was a very short time later that Portia was seen wearing a pink diamond engagement ring on her finger. And what a ring it was! It was a marquise cut diamond, all of 3 carats set in a band of pink pave. It was at the Daytime Emmy Awards function that it was first noticed.

And now we hear that they are married. They had just the very close family members with a few close friends around. They have been together since 2004, sharing a huge place at Cabrillo Drive in Los Angeles, USA. The famous talk show host and the actress of Ally McBeal fame exchanged wedding rings by Neil Lane as well as vows that were handwritten.

Ellen DeGeneres is 50 and Portia de Rossi is 35. Ellen has won four Outstanding Talk Show awards, has her own show on TV and has hosted the Oscars. She and Portia have been happy together for years and the Court ruling must have made them ecstatic knowing they could now publicly proclaim their love to the world.

Will there be royal diamond engagement ring soon? Or won’t there?

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Will William and Kate Middleton get engaged soon? Now that Kate has been allowed to stay in the hallowed environs of Clarence House, will she be wearing a ring on her finger soon?

With due apologies to Lewis Carroll, this could be what is on everyone’s mind!

Will you move a little faster?
Said the public to their prince
There’s a wedding that we’d like to see
So don’t you really think
You should hurry up the courtship
Not drag your feet like this?
Will they, won’t they, will they, won’t they
Enter wedded bliss?
Will they, won’t they, will they, won’t they
Seal it with a kiss?

What do you think? Do post your comments here and tell us whether you think they will get engaged soon or not!

Is This The Year To Find Lost Diamond Engagement Rings?

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

You’ve read about so many diamond rings that have been lost and found these past two months. You’ve read about the agony that someone went through losing their ring and the ecstasy when they found it. Well, you can now read about a ring that was lost and found after twenty – yes, twenty years!

It all began twenty years ago in Janesville, Wisconsin in the US when Diane Hanley took off her wedding and diamond engagement rings to help wash dishes at her sister’s graduation party. She remembers putting them both in her front pocket and then forgot about them as she went about among the guests and even went to the store. When she did realise that they were lost, everyone in the family helped to look around for them but they were nowhere to be found. Thinking that she has lost them forever, Diane just wrote it off sadly as a lost cause.

Then on the 19th of July this year, her mother was weeding the garden when she found what she thought were a child’s play rings. Having cleaned them up, she realised that they weren’t. So Diane and her rings were reunited and she vows she will never take them off again. Diane likes to feel it’s because she prayed so hard to get those rings back that she finally found them. Yet another tale of happy endings with diamond engagement rings!

The Record For A Diamond Engagement Ring

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Any bets on who spent the most when it came to buying a diamond engagement ring? Well, it looks like Donald Trump is going to win hands down with the one he gave his fiancé, Melania Knauss. Reported to be close to £1 million, this 12-carat diamond is a flawless emerald-cut stone set in platinum with tapered baguettes on either side.

It looks like the trend is towards the bigger, the more brilliant, the in-you-face brighter bling. If that’s what it’s all about, Donald Trump has trumped them all and come out tops! It’s probably going to be a bit of a strain carrying that rock around on your finger all day long, but we don’t think Melania’s complaining!

The news is also in that his son, Donald Jr. is also planning to walk up the aisle and has given his fiancé, Vanessa Haydon, a 4-carat emerald-cut diamond engagement ring. Now that’s an impressive sparkler too but probably fades when compared to his father’s.

There’s a bit of good news to look forward to for the rest of us mere mortals who can only gaze with awe at what goes on in the Trump Towers – there are a whole lot of jewellers who are working extra hard to get look alike rings into the market at a fraction of the price. So let’s take a wild guess at how many will be flashing Melania-kind of rings in the near future!

The Most Popular Diamond Engagement Ring Design Of All Time

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

It’s the preferred choice when it comes to a diamond engagement ring design, with most couples choosing it over all other designs. We’re talking about the classic Tiffany’s six-prong solitaire design for diamond engagement rings. It’s a design that has stood the test of time and it is probably the first design that comes to mind when you think of an engagement ring.

What is it about this simple design that has made it so popular? The reason probably lies in the fact that it is the best possible setting to show off a great diamond. While the six prongs hold the stone firm in their grasp, the open design and the simplicity are perfect foils to let the diamond shine with its best brilliance. It really is the best way for a diamond to catch all the possible light in the environment and reflect it to its sparkling best.

Of course with a setting like this, you really should look for the best diamond possible. No, this does not mean the biggest, but it should be a diamond that is cut to perfection, preferably white so its brilliance can be seen by all. Then this setting acts as a subtle yet elegant background to set off the beauty of the stone. In fact, it is its simplicity which shows off the best in a diamond that has made this design so appealing. When you put a sparking diamond in a setting that is busy and fussy, it takes away from the stone. Put it in this classic Tiffany setting and while it stays strong for years, it will also shine at its best for years. It’s traditional, it’s simple, it’s elegant and it stands the test of time – that’s what has made this design so popular.

There’s A Diamond Engagement Ring On Rod’s Ex’s Finger!

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Rachel Hunter, the supermodel could be tying the knot soon with her Canadian ice hockey boyfriend. She and Jarret Stoll were in New Zealand to see her family and what caught most people’s eye was the huge diamond ring she sported on her wedding ring finger. Was she taking her 13-year younger boyfriend to get her mother’s approval? She’s 39 and he’s 26.

Rachel Hunter hit the news years ago when she married Rod Stewart. The tall, willowy supermodel was again in the news when the lingerie firm Ultimo did not renew her contract but signed up with Penny Lancaster instead. The same Penny Lancaster who went on to marry Rod Stewart.

Rachel and Rod went their separate ways ten years ago and it now looks like she might want to settle down in Auckland, her hometown. The two children she has with Rod were with her and Jarret on this trip and she is eager to show off New Zealand’s hot spots and beautiful locales to her young sportsman. Jarret plays for a Los Angeles team and they share a million dollar home in California.

So when will that diamond engagement ring lead to a wedding band? Rachel is not telling and according to her spokesperson, she’ll let the world know when she’s good and ready.

Yet Another Story About A Lost Diamond Engagement Ring

Monday, August 11th, 2008

There are so many stories about lost diamond engagement rings – only not too many are lucky to find them again. The few who do are so incredibly lucky because it’s not just the value of the ring in monetary terms, it’s the sentimental value that can never quite be replaced. Well, here’s one more happy story.

Tyler Jones placed the engagement ring he had bought for his girlfriend Amanda Anderson on the bonnet of the car and forgot all about it. He turned the house upside down looking for the lost ring, quite forgetting where he had put it and even put an ad in the local paper but didn’t really have too much hope in finding it. So Tyler decided to wait a week and then propose to Amanda again, after having bought another ring.

Meanwhile a Harley Davidson rider, Monte Kirk rode along that road and found the ring box lying on the road so he took it home and when he and his wife realised there was a diamond ring inside, they started looking for ads about missing rings in the paper. They saw Tyler’s ad, called the number, asked for a description of the ring and handed it over to Tyler’s mother.

Someone returning a diamond ring seems rather far fetched but for Kirk, all he could think of was what his wife would go through if she lost her ring – so all he wanted to do was to find the rightful owner and spare them the pain of the loss. Tyler and Amanda got engaged that very same day with that ring!

Does Your Diamond Engagement Ring Look Different In Different Lighting?

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

It could happen to you. Very much in love, you could have just gone into a jewellery store and chosen the first diamond that looked good. Then realised that it looks different when you’re at home, different when you’re at a restaurant and different when you’re out in the sun. You wonder why.

Besides the 4 Cs that classify a diamond, there is also the factor of fluorescence. The grading report that you get when you buy a diamond will have this mentioned as well. This indicates to what extent a diamond could change its colour when viewed under different lighting. In fact some diamonds could look white when you buy them and could take on a positively yellow hue when you come home. Some look blue under certain lights.

So how do you know what your diamond engagement ring is going to look like? You might want to have a chat with the jeweller you are buying it from so he can explain it to you. Would there be any way that they would allow you to view the diamond in natural light as well? What does the fluorescence mentioned in the report indicate?

For many in the euphoric haze of being newly engaged, these seeming trivialities might seem terribly boring. However, do take a moment to pause and consider that you might be wearing that diamond engagement ring for a lifetime – so it might be just worth your while taking a little more time when you’re buying it.
