Diamond Rings And The Diamond Cutting CentresA diamond becomes a stone of brilliance only after it has been cut and diamond cutting is both an art and a science that gives the diamond its glorious glitter. Diamond cutters all over the world are a group of highly skilled, highly trained people who take their work very seriously. In their hands lies the fate of so many diamonds of different shapes and sizes. There are a few places in the world where these groups are located. Diamond Rings – Diamond Cutting In AntwerpThis is probably the world’s oldest diamond cutting centre, going back to the Middle Ages. This was the city that was the main diamond trading centre in Europe for centuries. DeBeers has a centre here and a large percentage of the world’s diamonds pass through this city even today. Besides cutting, Antwerp is famous for its grading and polishing as well. Diamond Rings: Other Cutting CentresThe other diamond cutting centres are spread across the world. In India, these are concentrated in two states – Gujarat and Maharashtra, where it is the smaller diamonds which are cut as labour is plentiful and cheap. There are over half a million people who are employed as in the diamond cutting trade. In Russia, the diamond cutting industry has grown in a few decades from a small one to a large and important one. What started as a small operation cutting diamonds for DeBeers suddenly blossomed with the discovery of diamonds in Siberia and now these cutters are also engaged in cutting for their own region. After the war, many of the diamond cutters from Europe fled to their motherland and so after the war, Israel had an industry that suddenly came up. Tel Aviv is the centre where most of them are located. Today, this cutting centre is the most advanced as far as technology is concerned. New York deals mostly with large diamonds which are rare and highly prized. There are also diamond cutting centres today in China, Thailand and Canada. Diamond Rings: Different Centres, Different CutsEach centre usually has its own unique diamond cutting expertise. The Russian cutters are known for their extreme precision and their fabulous finish. The Indian cutters concentrate on the small and very small stones and the industry is labour-intensive. Israel uses technology for its fancy cuts and China does a lot of small well cut round diamonds. Antwerp of course, together with New York and Tel Aviv is the centre where a lot of the exclusive diamonds are cut. It is all these cutters who come together to make the diamonds of this world sparkle and dazzle so that they light up any place where they are worn. |
