Diamond Rings : News and Articles

Platinum is a metal more precious than gold. It is mainly sourced from South Africa (where its use is mostly industrial) and Russia. It is considered the most precious metal, which makes it a perfect match for the diamond, that rarest of precious gems. The ancient Incas and Egyptians made fine jewellery from it, and it was worn by many of the Crowned Heads of Europe. In fact, prior to the 1940s, most diamond rings were made from platinum. The onset of World War II caused platinum to be declared a vital metal, to be used for weaponry only and banning its use for making jewellery in Europe and the U.S.A. In the last few years, platinum has again become popular with the “Beautiful People”.

Being a denser metal than gold, it is very difficult to handle and only extremely skilled craftsmen can work with it. This is why you will not find it in run-of-the-mill jewellery shops. But you will certainly find it in the Houses of Bvlgari, Harry Winston, Tiffany’s and of course, Cartier, whose skill in working with platinum was unmatched. He was the most sought after jeweller for many of the Royal Families in Europe as well as in India.

Fabergé’s famous jewellery eggs, created for the Tsars of Russia were made with platinum and encrusted with precious gemstones. They are now legendary masterpieces and prized by collectors worldwide. Beautiful pieces of Art Deco jewellery made with platinum from the 1920s are on display in museums in Europe. The natural white colour and superior strength made it the metal of choice as the setting for many precious gems.

Platinum is much tougher than gold and lends itself easily to the making of intricate jewellery. It can be worked into very delicate designs and is strong enough to hold precious stones securely. Its clean, white look makes it a favourite as a setting for a solitaire, and over time, it develops a natural patina which many find as attractive as the polished finish. Its smooth unblemished look, pure colour and ability to maintain a faultless finish gives platinum a natural elegance.

Platinum is rare, heavier than gold and requires expert craftsmanship. This naturally makes it far more expensive. But then, it does not wear away and your platinum ring will not thin out over the years. Engagement rings made in the 1920s are still worn today, with the gemstones securely in place. As value for money, platinum is an excellent investment which will only grow with time. As a statement of style, it is classy, distinctive and sophisticated. If “Diamonds are Forever” as the old ad goes, then certainly platinum has to be the perfect setting!
